In 1890, a wealthy sheik invited an American, Frank T. Hopkins, and his horse to enter the race for the first time. During the course of his career, Hopkins was a cowboy and dispatch rider for the U.S. cavalry--and had once been billed as the greatest rider the West had ever known. The Sheik puts his claim to the test, pitting the American cowboy and his mustang, Hidalgo, against the world's greatest Arabian horses and Bedouin riders--some of whom are determined to prevent a foreigner from finishing the race. For Frank, the Ocean of Fire becomes not only a matter of pride and honor, but a race for his very survival as he and his horse attempt the impossible.

The arabs are much prettier though watch it if only for the pretty, pretty horses

I am a big fan of the underdog(horse) and Hidalgo just has so much character and the bond between him and Frank is just too special. I cried towards the end, had a good giggle throughout, genuinely a movie I enjoyed.

While working as a stunt rider in a Wild West show that depicts the Battle of "Wounded Knee" (a battle that Frank himself carried the order for), Hopkins and his horse are advertised as "the world's greatest distance horse and rider". The Arabs consider their Arabian Blood lines to be the greatest distance horses. The show is asked to stop using that phrase or to allow Hopkins and Hidalgo to enter the race The Ocean of Fire, a greulling 3000mile journey throw daunting desert terain, and prove themselves worthy of the title they have given themselves. The Arabs, deperate not to have an impure horse compete in never mind finish their race, are prepared to go to any lengths to stop Hopkins, forcing him to deal a servant that is barely able to carry water for his horse to having corrupt watering hole officials that refuse to give him water along the race. Hopkins is also pushed into a family feud with the Sheiks nephew that is after the Sheiks leading stallion, with Hopkins placing himself in their firing line after foiling that plan. The nephew forces Hopkins into a trap, severly injuring Hidalgo, with Frank dying of thirst and Hildago injured and unable to continue, Hopkins is forced to face his own heritage and begins praying to his Indian ancestors. The hope that by wining this race, Frank will have enough money to save the beloved Mustang horses of the Indians, is a driving force behind his desire to go on. The bond that is evident between Frank and Hildalgo through out this movie is something amazing to behold, and something that all of us aspire to have with our own horses.

It is about a guy that does endurance riding in America and decides to enter the Arabian desert race with his mustang. all the entrants in the race laughed at him as his horse will never make the desert terrain and how they managed to beat the odds and survive the gruelling desert terrain and temperatures. Really awesome movie. you actually feel his and the horse's pain and suffering through the race.
