All the elements are there: A likeable hero who pursues the truth at great personal risk; a sweet but never turn-the-page-torrid romance with a bend in the road; outside knowledge about an interesting field, and an interesting villain one can almost sympathize with on some level. It grabs you right away with the murder of a jockey during a race and never lets go, right to the surprising conclusion - one, incidentally, which our hero desperately wanted not to be so. Enjoy. It's a great start to a great, long ride. Francis' first and one of his best.

I've read most of his books and enjoyed each one. His stories and characters are totally believable. Read Dead Cert - it wont be a waste of time.

Alan watches in front of him, as his friend takes the kind of fall over a jump that you just know is fatal. It seems impossible, his horse was the out and out favorite to win, a dead cert, he hadn't made a mistake in 2 years. As Alan clears the jump himself, he notices something that shouldn't be there, but cant be sure exactly what it was. later after consolling his friends wife, he goes back and finds the piece of evidence that sends him on a journey of dangerous thugs and possibly having the same "accident"happen to him. I love Dick Francis books, they give you an insight into the jump racing world, even if it is laced with murder and mystery.
