I ride with gadgets when the need arises my horses and I never fight, when I take the gadgets off the horses work in a much better frame automatically, due to muscle development. I am pro-gadget and proud of it. We must do whatever is right for our horses and enjoy our training methods I adore my horses, and would NEVER submit them to any kind of pain, I always put their needs above my own. They are all ridden in saddles re-fitted twice a year, with snaffle bridles, and are fat and happy, no pain. So please- don't judge a rider by the gadgets they use, rather by the happiness of the horse and the way their horses go whilst ridden. [ Edited Thu Mar 18 2010, 07:04AM ] tum

We are all up in arms about the use of gadgets but has any one actually realised that the use of a bridle and a saddle is using gadgets. Are we then not wrong if we say we do not use gadgets or believe in their use? There is no right or wrong on this subject. As long as the use of gadgets is done correctly and to the benefit of both rider and stead. It is all personal taste. One day someone who does not believe in gadgets may have the need to use them and visa versa. No one can truly critise anyone here we are all guilty of using gadgets on some shape or form be it right or wrong it does not matter. Can anyone here truly say they can ride their horses with out the use of a saddle or bridle. I doubt there are very many and those of you that can I envy you, I still have a very long way to go before every reaching that level. The key is RESPECT, TRUST and UNDERSTANDING.

I used to swear by a pessoa training aid as a lungeing tool. Lately I've been working my horse on the lunge with no more than a lunge cavesson lately as she is recovering from a stifle injury. She has been working beautifully and in a round frame on her own. It takes a bit longer to warm her up and getting her to work properly on her own but in the end I have the same result as I did usuing a gadget. I don't condemn gadets though as some horse need them to overcome training issues. Obviously there are riders who abuse gadgets or use them as a shortcut. We all know there are no shortcuts in training a horse.

Schooling without the use of gadgets takes a lot longer, is a lot more difficult, but is so worth it in the end. Obviously, it goes without saying that you (or your instructor) not only have to know what you are doing, but also have to have the patience and passion to take the time required to go through the schooling process.

Have just discovered an article on "Flexion and Its Importance" (posted in my blog), and that is the solve-all. Have been working on flexions with four horses in the last two weeks, and it works every time. With running reins I have seen time and again that they can get a horse behind the bit, which then disables its elasticity and destroys trust in the riders hands. Quick fixes are just that. They are not long term solutions. Anyway, that's my experience and what I feel about gadgets. I avoid them like the plague The wind of heaven is that which blows between a horse\'s ears. ~Arabian Proverb

It all depends on the horse and the rider.I'm very fond of a running martingale for horses who have learnt to thro their heads and for more novice riders as it assists on "ironing" out the movements of the riders hands. I agree you must lunge a horse with a gadget of some sort depending on the horse and what it needs. But very few riders have the hands soft enough to use running reins, that includes most expert trainers.
