Get by with a little help from your friends

Give a little, get a little with Neigh-Bours’ Helping Hooves.

Everyone needs someone to lean on sometimes, and who better to lean on than a Neigh-Bour?

Should you find yourself in a horse-related situation that requires financial assistance, your Neigh-Bours can help.

What we ask of you:

You deposit a R10.00 a month (or R120.00 a year) donation into the Neigh-Bours bank account. That's right, TEN rand. Only.

If every Neigh-Bour donates only R10.00 each, we could raise over R40 000.00 per month.Thats's right, FORTY THOUSAND RAND a month to help our Neigh-Bours or donate to the Highveld Horse Care Unit (Gauteng), Coastal Horse Care Unit (KZN), Mthatha Horse Rescue Clinic (E Cape) and Dassenberg Horse Rescue Centre (W Cape).

Click here to see who has already contributed!

What you get:

If you need a financial helping hand for an equine emergency, or bad situation, ask.

If the emergency is real, or your situation deserving of compassion, we'll pay for it out of the fund.

    1. It's not a loan, it's a gift - you will not be required to pay it back.
    2. Only genuine emergencies will qualify: colic, major illness, serious wounds; emergency travel etc.
    3. You will be required to PROVE the emergency to the Fund Committee (provide bank statements/vets bills etc)
    4. The Fund Committee decides if we pay out or not. Fund Committee = Neigh-Bours Ambassadors + Neigh-Bours Admins.
    5. Site Admin has final veto say.
    6. This is NOT an alternative to insurance. THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT YOU WILL GET A PAYOUT FROM THIS ... but even if you don't, it will get paid out to a horse charity!
    7. If you don't like these rules ... don't participate!

      How you qualify:

      • You have to be a signed up member of the Neigh-Bours website.
      • You have to have been contributing to the fund for a minimum of 3 months (proof of payments will be requested) BEFORE making a request; or have paid an upfront annual payment at least 3 months before your request..
      • You need to email your problem to info@neigh-bours.co.za giving as much detail as possible

      The Fine Print:

      1. Neigh-Bours will keep 15% to cover all banking charges and to maintain the minimum balance in the account, but it will NOT be removed from the account, it will stay in the account as a float.
      2. Any contributing Neigh-Bours site member can request to see the bank statement at any time.
      3. Any money left in the account by financial year end each year (minus 3 month float + 15% surcharge) gets split equally and donated to the charities listed above.
      4. Once you've had a payout from the fund, you may not request another for at least 6 months.
      5. It is NOT compulsory to contribute, but if you don't contribute, you may not call on it.
      6. There is no upper limit to the payment, bar what's in the account (minus the 3 month float and the 15% surcharge).
      7. More than one person may get a payout in any month.
      8. No secrets! If we've helped you, we're going to say so publically, on the site and on Facebook, so the community knows where their donastions are going.
      9. This is NOT an alternative to insurance. THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT YOU WILL GET A PAYOUT FROM THIS ... but even if you don't, it will get paid out to a horse charity!

So, extend a helping hoof. Be able to say "I helped".

        Donate nowHow to pay

Donate via the Neigh-Bours online shop
Click http://www.neigh-bours.co.za/shop.php?category=help and get a monthly or annual donation from the shop.
This will generate an invoice for you, with banking details on it.

NB: YOU MUST EMAIL US PROOF OF PAYMENT EVERY TIME FOR US TO BE ABLE TO TRACK YOUR PAYMENTS

What the Fund is NOT for:

This fund is NOT to help you buy a horse, a new saddle, new johds or a blingy browband. It is not for transport to shows or outrides, nor is it to pay your subscription fees to your Graded Body or for show entries. It will not be used for anything elective. Don't even ask

        1. I think its a great idea. Just one thought, can't we try and help more then one horsey organisation, there is so many non profit organisations out there, that does wonderful work for our equine friends.

What if we make a list of all these places, people that we know of, members can help, and then one organisations per month can receive 10% of the monies received monthly.

          Just a thought.

I will also make a donation on behalf of the Umthatha Horse Rescue Clinic - Janine is doing wonderful work all on her own, and relies solely on donations to help the working ponies in and around Umthatha. It would be great if she could get a bit of help every now and again.

I am sure that you are going to work out all the legal implications etc. so keep us posted

The reason we said we want the SAME contribution from EVERYONE is so that there can be no bias when it comes to requests for help! Does that make sense?

Your members are from the whole of SA, but you only give money to HHCU what about the others like the big one in KZN??

From "Hony & Equestrian Society" we give you 10/10 and wish you well and hope it works out the way you have sad in the opening info.

        1. That is good news. All I was pointing out is that you do tend to put HHCU over every other horse care unit.

The big thing here is you have had a good response to this, but people are quick to say yes. How ever when you start and ask for there money they will be ............

I am not being negative, but went down the road when I started the Equestrian Society we got hundreds of people jumping up and down "YES YES YES" how do we join, but when we sent them the form they no one joined!!!!

          All the best.

        1. Yes, HHCU is our admins' charity of choice and always has been - our web designer donated their website to them and runs their online marketing as part of her "give back" to the horse world.
However, we're happy to share with other charities as the community has requested.

We've never found a problem with people getting on board with our initiatives - we ask, people say yes and then it happens
          Thanks for your support Hony!

But I have one query, who will decide if somebody "qualifies" to get financial assistance? And how much will be allocated to what kind of emergency? Will there be some kind of committee or criteria? I hope I'm not jumping the gun or sounding too cynical, but let's say there are two or three members who need help in the same month, how will you decide who gets what? And will these requests be made public before funds are awarded?

[phew! Many questions! I know that this is a good hearted effort, and I support it fully I hope these questions are not taken up wrongly, I do think it's a fantastic idea!]

We'll try to help as many members as there is cash for and pay as much as possible of their total bills. We'll very likely to do a percentage so every successful request gets the same percentage of their bill paid, in the case you mentioned.

Questions are GOOD! We've sat up late into the night trying to think of every possible scenario and to make it a simple as possible, but we appreciate all feedback!

        1. Hello! I know I know, I'm late! But I have just a small suggestion - in stead of limiting the contributions that members can make, include it in the rules of the fund that EVERYONE gets the same consideration from the fund, regardless of any extra contributions, and that the only criteria will be that the annual/monthly contribution as it stands is up to date. Alternatively, allow contributors to nominate a charity listed on Neigh-Bours to receive their extra contribution?

Also, how about featuring a listed charity every month - interview the person responsible for it, and put up some pictures of the work they are doing. If members can nominate a charity, it is quite possible that the featured charity will receive an increased contribution that month, and each of them will get a turn to receive a "booster shot", which I know is sorely needed.

        1. Hi Silver,
everyone DOES get the same consideration, no matter how much they would put in ... and in an ideal world, we'd jump at your suggestion. But we know human beings are subject to emotion, so we want to remove all temptation towards the suggestion of bias.

And the charities are paid ANUALLY, not monthly, unfortunately - if everyone got aboard and we were pulling in R40 000 a month, we'd definitely do it - but only 10% of site members are currently contributing.
When that changes, we'll definitely take you up on that idea!

        1. Thanks everybody - we have paid out to the 4 charities, and have decided not to continue this year - it's too much admin for too little support, unfortunately

        1. THANK YOU all Neigh-bours supporters for sending a donation of R1,400 to the Highveld Horse Care Unit. We are really grateful to you all - it was a wonderful group initiative!

The donation will be put towards our inspections, which are currently flying in, with horses being rescued and assisted in many areas - this is our current priority.

          Special thanks to you Neigh-bours!:p
